Elyas Alyas
Elyas was 21 when he came to Germany from Syria ten years ago. He had already studied to become an elementary school teacher in Syria. To continue his studies in Germany, he didn’t wait for the integration course but taught himself German on his own. In November, he began his teaching internship at an elementary school. He says, “I want to give something back for what I’ve received.”

The fact that the AfD is getting so many votes scares him. He doesn't know if he wants to stay in Germany if things keep going this way.

The fig tree reminds Elyas of his homeland. He planted it himself with a friend.
